"Happy school-days days at Monksdown"

A review of Monksdown Primary School by Laurie Haworth written on Friday 1st of July 2011

I started school at Monksdown infants in 1934 ( headmistress, Miss Willets) and left the junior boys (headmaster, Mr. Ike Williams) in 1940, when my classteacher was Harold Jones, of whom I have very fond memories.

I was visiting my mother in Lewisham Road on the night the original wooden building burned down and I can remember the sadness I felt to see so many childhood memories going up in flames, after the school had survived all the bombing of WW2, even when a bomb actually fell, destroying a couple of houses in nearby Glasonby Cresent.

Eventually, I became a junior school headteacher in Gloucestershire where I am now retired. I still have many happy memories of Monksdown and would like to wish all the Staff & pupils ( present & past) every success in what they are presently doing. Best wishes

from Laurie(Lawrence) Haworth- ex-pupil .
