Looking out across the mouth of the Mersey is the town of Wallasey, which links to the city of Liverpool via the Kingsway Tunnel. The town incorporates a number of smaller places including Seacombe and New Brighton, and Wallasey as a whole is very much more sleepy retirement village than bustling town. In the 60's Wallasey was seen as a prestigious holiday resort. Historically Wallasey had close naval links, with it's proximity to the shipyards of Bootle and Birkenhead up the coast, and was to be used as a tower of guard for shipping entering the Mersey estuary. Both Liscard and Perchrock forts, built in the early 18th century along with the New Brighton lighthouse, were used right up until the 50's by army and navy personnel. Electro band OMD, who had a hit in the 80's with "Enola Gay", grew up in Wallasey.
